The Armata celebrations 2014 include numerous events which will take place on the beautiful island of Spetses from September, 8 to September, 14.
Armata has become an “institution” associated not only with Spetses but with the entire country. It is – among other things – about the naval battle at Spetses, which took place on September 8, 1822, when a revolutionary named Kosmas Barbatsis defied danger, approached and set the Turkish flagship afire, sinking it at the harbour. His action played a decisive part in the battle’s outcome as it forced the enemy to flee.
The Armata celebrations are centred each year on the reenactment of the naval battle on Spetses with the setting on fire of a model of the Turkish flagship. Quite a few mostly cultural events for the young of all ages are to take place this year -as always- to celebrate the anniversary.
This year’s celebrations include theatre performances, concerts of traditional and modern music, dance shows and exhibitions. The celebrations will culminate with the reenactment of the sea battle on Saturday, September 13. Colourful fireworks mark the end of the event.
